John Lewis McCain, M.D.
John Lewis McCain was born on April 11, 1927 in Hoke County at
Sanitorium, NC. He joined the Navy on May 10, 1945 at the age of 18 as a
sole surviving son. His older brother, Paul Pressly McCain, Jf., was a Lt. In
the Army Air Corps. Paul was lost over the English Channel when the B 17
on which he was a Navigator went down after a bombing raid on July 8,
1944 (one month after D -Day). John tried to join the Navy at age 17
immediately after the death of his older brother, but was not allowed to join
until he was 18 years old. His parents had to sign for him to be enlisted. He
trained at Bainbridge, Maryland. He served his entire time in the service at
Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. His rank was a Pharmacist
Mate Third Class, USNR, V -6. He was Honorably Discharged from the US
Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia.
Most of his time in service was spent as an Assistant in the Operating
Rooms at the Hospital. The physicians with whom he served knew that he
was interested in studying medicine, and they provided him wonderful
training for his later life as a physician. His highest rank reached was a
Hospital Apprentice First Class I-C. He received the American Area
Victory Medal. He later went to Medical School at UNC- Chapel Hill and
graduated from the University of Virginia. Upon his discharge from the
service, John went immediately back to UNC- Chapel Hill where he went to
school year-round, and graduated on time with his class with a degree in
Chemistry! The G.!. Bill enabled him to attend medical school since his
physician father was tragically killed a month after John returned home from
John was not born in Wilson County, but he lived in Wilso:q ~ost 50
years. He practiced Internal Medicine and Rheumatolo~t\vo weeks short
of 50 years after a courageous battle against pancreatic c~cef. He was
proud to call Wilson his home!
