ANECDOTE OF TWO ELEPHANTS.
Not long since two elephants were
taken from the menagerie of the prince
of Orange, at the house in the Woods,
near the Ffague. The morning after
their arrival in Paris these animals were
|iu"t in possession of then new habita-tion.
The liisl who entered was the
male, (Hans,) who seemed to enter with
a degree of suspicion, alter having is-sued
with precaution from his cage.
Ilis liisl care was to survey the place.
Me examined every bar with his trunk,
and tried their solidity. The large
screws by which they are held togeth-er,

Mi/ Dear Christian Brother;—You
will, perhaps, think- it strange that 1
should reside more than two entire
years in the island, without visiting
once, during the period, the spot where
it is supposed the Apostle to the Gen-tiles

of the Apostle's shipwreck, as il is re-corded
in the Arts of the Apostles, 1
have always encountered difficulties
which 1 could never overcome. The
difficulty of understanding ibis account,
is much greater in our English transla-original.

YANKEE INGENUITY.
A7« find ingenious Workmanship.
We have seen sonic specimens of tin*
commonly nice an I ingenious workman-ship
and mechanical skill, made by Mr.
Nathaniel Perkins of this town. They
consist of a pair of scissors complete in
all their part-, a'fnl of perfect construc-tion
and finish, precisely om; inch in
length ; ami what is still mure curious,
another pair ol scissors eipially complete
andofe'pial finish with the first, but
rmly three tenths of an inch in length.
These hist have a steel lag and an ivory
bodkin nl the same I'Migth, with them
tn match. The whole sol being, when
shown tu us, contained in a nocdlehook
of appropriate iliuifnsin'is, funned one
ot'the most beautiful collectionsofmin-iilure
workmanship imaginable. We
recollect of seeing a card of Rogers, the
Sheffield manufacturer, whose, pen-knives
and other fnv cut lery are so cele-brated,
in which I.ii-t.i .in is made of a
pairof scissors of his own manufacture,
weighing only half a grain, iis a great
curiosity. The scissors made by Mr.
Perkins are a still greater curiositv, as
they weigh It ss than half a grain. Mr.
Perkins appeal - In h ive n large share of
the mechanical talent of his family ; and
is highly in •■ rving of encouragement.
